The tranquil solo violin introduces a new view of the situation as this little troll discovers the beauties of this world. With chaos being him, he is lost in the beautiful view. He looks out the window, seeing the morning sun rise. The chaos goes on until the end of the first minute where we cut to a peculiar, interested and young little troll which is introduced to us by the bird-like flute on the diminuendo of the strings from the climax. As Curtains burn 3 foot tall green goblins run around, with high pitched laughter they terrify the family living in this building, having them frantically search for help. At this moment the trolls have broken in, looting and stealing, causing much of a ruckus with no end in sight! As the lower brass section joins in further we get a further feeling of chaos. As the brass and lower strings play through their “gallop” (0:20-0:26) we get a sudden introduction of percussion which brings in even more tension and instrumentation at 0:28 with the strings beginning with descending chromatic scale and creating a sense of tension and trouble. At the 26th second we get hit with the first major climax of this piece. We only get a short intro however as at the 20th second the music begins to slowly escalate via dynamic but also with more brass being introduced and the strings slowly changing from pizzicato to Arco. This introduction alone gives me a feeling of a bunch of trolls, sneaking out from under their bridge to go and do something, but we don’t exactly know what. The piece opens with some quick pizzicato by the lower strings which is joined by swift arpeggio by a solo flute which introduces the rest of the string section which accompanies the lower string with an even faster pizzicato. I am not even going to bother doing any research on this piece as I am looking for first impressions here! ![]() Mischief, tension, calmness and in my case awe at how well it is executed. March of the Trolls by Edvard Grieg is a piece that conveys many feelings. While looking for a piece to look over, I came across one by a composer we already covered in this blog, however I couldn’t hold myself back as the introduction alone got me hooked!
